Four Hundred Years of Royal History

Rosenborg was built between 1606 and 1634 by the prolific builder-king Christian IV — the same monarch who shaped much of the Copenhagen skyline we still admire today. What began as a modest summer pavilion outside the city walls gradually evolved, through four phases of construction, into the distinctive Dutch Renaissance castle we see today, with its red brick façade, sandstone window frames and slender spires.

Christian IV loved Rosenborg above all his other palaces. So devoted was he to it that, as he lay dying at Frederiksborg in 1648, he commanded that he be transported by sled back to Rosenborg to breathe his last breath there. The castle served as a royal residence until around 1710, when his great-grandson Frederik IV shifted preference to more fashionable summer palaces. Rather than falling into neglect, Rosenborg was repurposed to house the royal collections — a decision that preserved its extraordinary interiors almost intact for three hundred years.

The castle opened to the public in 1838 and has been a fixture on the Copenhagen cultural circuit ever since. Today it receives more than 500,000 paying visitors a year, while the surrounding King's Garden — Kongens Have — draws approximately three million people annually, making it Copenhagen's most visited park.

The Crown Jewels: Denmark's Greatest Treasure

The undisputed highlight of any visit to Rosenborg is the Treasury, where Denmark's crown jewels are held under close guard. This is one of the very few places in Europe where visitors can stand within arm's reach of regalia still actively used by a reigning monarch. Queen Mary wears these same diamonds, rubies and pearls at state occasions today — which makes the experience genuinely singular rather than merely historical.

Among the most extraordinary pieces is Christian IV's coronation crown from 1596, crafted in Odense over the course of a full year and set with 970 precious stones, pearls and diamonds. The collection also includes the Danish crown regalia: orb, sceptre and sword of state, alongside ceremonial jewellery spanning four centuries of royal taste.

A major transformation is currently underway. Rosenborg is receiving a new underground Royal Treasury — "Rigets Skatkammer" — funded by the AP Møller Foundation and the Augustinus Foundation, which will give visitors access to far larger portions of the collection than is currently possible, displayed in a dramatically atmospheric underground setting. It is, by any measure, one of the most significant developments in Danish museum history for a generation.

Inside the Castle: A Walk Through Danish History

Beyond the Treasury, the castle itself is a chronological journey through Danish royal history from Christian IV to Frederik VII. The interiors have survived with remarkable integrity — audience chambers, tapestried halls, a throne room with three silver lions, and the very bedchamber where Christian IV died. The Long Hall contains a set of monumental tapestries commissioned by Christian V depicting his victories in the Scanian War of 1675–79, among the finest examples of European Baroque textile art.

The museum is compact enough to explore in two to three hours without fatigue — an ideal half-day excursion before an afternoon round at one of Copenhagen's excellent golf courses.

Kongens Have: The King's Garden

The castle sits within twelve hectares of immaculately kept gardens, established in 1606 as a kitchen and pleasure garden for the court. The characteristic grid of pathways — Damegangen (the Ladies' Walk) and Kavalergangen (the Gentlemen's Walk) — traces the same lines laid out by Christian IV himself. The garden's herbaceous border, at 250 metres, is one of the longest in Europe. Open daily and free to enter, Kongens Have is the perfect place for a morning stroll or a picnic lunch between cultural and golfing engagements.

Rosenborg Castle is located at Øster Voldgade 4A in central Copenhagen, just 200 metres from Nørreport Station, which is served by metro, S-train and regional rail. Advance booking of a timed entry slot is required. The King's Garden is open daily from early morning, with hours varying by season.
