Aalborg Golf Klub is Denmark's second-oldest golf club, and today it's a 27-hole championship venue tucked into the countryside by the Limfjord, just outside Aalborg. For anyone building a golf holiday in North Jutland, it's one of the region's essential stops — both for the golf and for the history behind it.
The club was founded in 1908 on the initiative of Eugen Schmidt, a man with an unusual sporting résumé: he had competed at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, and by 1900 he'd won Olympic gold in tug of war. That founding makes Aalborg Golf Klub the second-oldest golf club in the country, surpassed only by Copenhagen Golf Klub.
The course itself, laid out by course architect Harris, grew gradually into what it is today. For decades the club played on just nine holes, only reaching a full 18 in 1976. A third nine-hole loop followed, and by 2006 the club had its current 27-hole layout: three equal nine-hole loops — red, yellow and blue — with two of the three combined for any given round, so every loop sees regular play rather than one course taking priority over the others.

The course sits in Restrup Enge, a gently rolling stretch of countryside close to the Limfjord, just a short drive outside Aalborg. Lakes and pockets of forest weave through the terrain, giving the layout real variety — some holes open and exposed to the west wind, others tucked among the trees. One hole in particular has become something of a club landmark: the eighth on the yellow nine, known locally as "the Rhododendron Hole" for the towering rhododendron bushes planted around it decades ago, voted the members' favourite hole in a 2017 club poll.
Aalborg Golf Klub's championship pedigree isn't incidental. Over the years, the course has hosted both Danish and European championships, as well as rounds of the European Challenge Tour — a track record that has earned it a reputation as one of the country's genuine tournament venues, not just a pleasant place for a casual round.
Denmark's weather doesn't always cooperate with golf, but Aalborg Golf Klub comes close to beating the calendar: thanks to its well-drained terrain by the Limfjord, the club plays golf nearly all year round — though it's the long, bright Danish summer that draws most visiting golfers, a rarity for a course this far north. Practice facilities match the ambition of the main courses, with a driving range, putting green and short-game area giving visitors somewhere to warm up properly before heading out onto one of the three nines.
International golfers rate the course highly, too. On the review platform Leading Courses, Aalborg Golf Klub holds an average score of 8.4 out of 10 across more than 50 reviews — a strong result for a course open to visitors year-round. German reviewers on the Albrecht Golf Guide describe a beautifully laid-out course full of variety, with holes running uphill, elevated greens, and tee shots played straight over water — the kind of layout, they note, that leaves you feeling thoroughly at ease by the end of the round.
With more than 1,600 active members, Aalborg Golf Klub is the largest golf club in North Jutland — and it plays like it, with the kind of polish and infrastructure that comes from a century of continuous use. The modern clubhouse includes a well-stocked pro shop and a restaurant looking out over the course, a natural spot to compare scorecards after a round on any of the three nines.
For visitors planning a golf trip to North Jutland, Aalborg Golf Klub offers something rare: a genuinely championship-calibre course within easy reach of a proper city, its restaurants, museums and waterfront life along the Limfjord — and, an hour south, Aarhus's Michelin-starred dining scene for anyone extending the trip.
It also sits naturally alongside the region's other standout courses — the wild heathland of Golfklubben Hvide Klit near Skagen, or the dune-and-forest test of Nordvestjysk Golfklub in Thy National Park — as part of a wider golf trip through North Jutland. Whether it's a single round on a broader itinerary or the anchor point of a full golf package through the region's best courses, Aalborg Golf Klub earns its place as one of Denmark's most complete golf destinations — a club old enough to have shaped the country's golfing history, and sharp enough to still be adding to it.
